Marriage Seminar 2

The following 16 lectures can be ordered individually @

R60/R80 each or as a compilation @ R400 from luzette@gcs.co.za . They are also available as downloads @R60each. The lecturers are between 1 –2 hours long.

All these lectures were recorded live with Skip and Rabbi Bob Gorelik and a the group that traveled to Israel in April-May of 2014.In addition, Moshe Kempinski and Rabbi Jeremy Gimpel were special guest lecturers and Israeli Yoav Bruck gave a moving testimony regarding life in Israel and the camaraderie and patriotism of those who live there:

1.YOAV BRUCK: WHAT GOD MEANS TO ISRAELIS TODAY
Israeli guide Yoav Bruck speaks about God’s presence in the daily life of citizens of Israel and shares a personal, compelling story about his friend’s actions in the war against terrorism.

2. PARADIGMS AND EXEGESIS
An opening lecture on paradigms and the role they play in exegesis. Skip Moen discusses the need for understanding our own paradigm before we can successfully communicate with others and the need for sensitivity to the structure of a belief system.

3.WHY PROOF TEXTS DON’T WORK: COMMUNICATING ACROSS PARADIGMS
Most of us have experienced the frustration of attempting to get another person to understand our Hebraic view of Scripture. Proof texts rarely make any difference. The real issue is about the interpretive scheme the other person brings to the text. This is the role of a paradigm. In this lecture Skip and Bob comment on the way paradigms work and how it is possible to help others “see” a different paradigm.

4.DIONYSUS, THE CULT OF SOULS AND CHRISTIAN CONCEPTS OF IMMORTALITY
Early Greek mystical religions included the Cult of Souls found in the worship of Dionysus. A great deal of the theology and practice of this mystical religion made its way into Plato and eventually into Augustine. Many Christian doctrines show remarkable affinity with this pagan religion. In this lecture, Skip and Bob explore the connections between Greek religion and later Christian thought, emphasizing the striking differences with Hebraic ideas about the afterlife and the dead.

6.THE HEBRAIC CONCEPT OF THE AFTERLIFE
Rabbi Bob Gorelik concludes the lectures on immortality, the soul, Sheol and the afterlife with this audio recording on the Hebraic view of life after death.

7.DAVID AND GOLIATH: A MIDRASH
The biblical account of David and Goliath is the backdrop for a discussion of midrash. Bob Gorelik explains how midrash works and how it may be applied. Since nearly all apostolic author and Yeshua make extensive use of midrash, understanding this rabbinic technique is essential for correctly reading the New Testament.

8.HALACHA AS THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING PAUL’S ADVICE TO THE SCATTERED ASSEMBLIES
Pauline material follows standard rabbinic practices. One important practice is halacha, the declaration of binding rulings on a community based on Torah principles. Understanding how this works and why it is particular to the circumstances of those addressed is crucial for reading Paul as a rabbi. Bob Gorelik examines the role of halacha and describes how Paul uses it in his letters.

9.PAUL AS RABBI
Bob Gorelik discusses Paul as a rabbi, how he thought, sources he used, arguments he developed, and his commitment to the various communities he served.
10JEREMY GIMPEL ON TORAH FOR GENTILES
Rabbi Jeremy Gimpel speaks about understanding the role of Torah in the life of a God-fearing Gentile. Rabbi Gimpel is well known in Israel and a friend of the At God’s Table community. His comments as a recognized orthodox rabbi are particularly helpful.

11THE SEAT OF MOSES: AN EXAMINATION OF YESHUA’S ADMONITION
Rabbi Bob Gorelik speaks on the subject of the “seat of Moses,” its meaning in the life of the community and Yeshua’s intention behind the famous passage.

12THE MEANING OF THE CROSS IN THE FIRST CENTURY
Skip Moen lectures on the meaning of the cross in the first century, outlining some of the ideas in his book, Cross Word Puzzles. The lecture includes additional remarks by Bob Gorelik on the subject and a Q&A from the audience.

13TWO HOUSE THEOLOGY: A CRITICAL REVIEW OF A MESSIANIC MOVEMENT
Bob Gorelik gives an overview of “Two House theology” in the Messianic movement and provides a critique of its claims.

14UNDERSTANDING RABBINIC MATERIAL TODAY
Bob Gorelik provides a useful discussion of rabbinic material, its content, its scope and the means to access it for non-Hebrew readers. Since this material is assumed by Paul’s use of Scripture, understanding its content and scope helps us read Paul from a Hebraic point of view.

15MOSHE KEMPINSKI ON TORAH IN THE LIFE OF A GENTILE
Moshe Kempinski speaks to the group about following Torah as a Jew and as a Gentile. Moshe’s sensitivity to those who are coming with a Christian backgrounds is particularly evident in this open-hearted discussion.

16QUESTIONS CONCERNING IMPORTANT ISSUES TODAY
Bob and Skip answer questions concerning contraception, tithing and the doctrine of the Trinity.  In an open forum, Bob and Skip deal with both practical the theological issues raised by the group in Israel.

Our Mission Statement

At God’s Table was born out of a crisis experience. It grew by word of mouth for many years. As a result, it is focussed on two critical areas – personal spiritual growth and engagement within a community. The purpose of At God’s Table is to provide insight, teaching, exploration and encounter with God’s Word and convert that experience into real obedience. Today’s Word, the daily email delivery of At God’s Table, is just one way that we provide this instruction. Lectures, books, articles and personal encounters are also used to encourage people to discover lives of dependence on God. Furthermore, At God’s Table encouages every reader to join the community by making a tangible offering of finances or services. We are here to help each other in real ways.
